Information Activism : A Queer History of Lesbian Media Technologies  /

samenvatting: For decades, lesbian feminists across the United States and Canada have created information to build movements and survive in a world that doesn't want them. In Information Activism Cait McKinney traces how these women developed communication networks, databases, and digital archives that formed the foundation for their work. Often learning on the fly and using everything from index cards to computers, these activists brought people and their visions of justice together to organize, store, and provide access to information. Focusing on the transition from paper to digital-based archival techniques from the 1970s to the present, McKinney shows how media technologies animate the collective and unspectacular labor that sustains social movements, including their antiracist and trans-inclusive endeavors. By bringing sexuality studies to bear on media history, McKinney demonstrates how groups with precarious access to control over information create their own innovative and resourceful techniques for generating and sharing knowledge.

Gender minority stress in education: Protecting trans children's mental health in UK schools  / Cal Horton.

International Journal of Transgender Health, 24 (2023) 2 (apr-jun), p. 195-211
bron: International Journal of Transgender Health jaargang: 24 (2023) 2 (apr-jun), p. 195-211
samenvatting: Trans children are known to experience challenges in education, in schools under-prepared for trans inclusion. Research on trans people's mental health has shown an association between experiences of Gender Minority Stress (GMS) and poor mental health, though the GMS framework has not been applied to trans children?s experiences in education. This article examines trans children's experiences of GMS in primary and early secondary education (ages 3-13 years old) in UK schools. The study aimed to uncover opportunities for protective action to safeguard trans children's mental health. The GMS framework was applied to a rich qualitative dataset drawn from semi-structured interviews with 10 trans children and 30 parents of trans children average age 11 years-old (range 6?16). Data were analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. The research highlighted the diverse ways in which GMS manifests in primary and secondary education. Trans children in the UK experienced a wide range of trans-specific stressors, putting children under chronic strain. Schools need to recognize the range of potential stresses experienced by trans pupils in education. Poor mental health in trans children and adolescents is avoidable, and schools have a duty of care to ensure trans pupils are physically and emotionally safe and welcome at school. Preventative early action to reduce GMS is needed to protect trans children, safeguarding the mental health of vulnerable pupils.

The MBB Manifesto: It Was Never Just Football  / Raphael H. Martins, Pedro Vieira, Cara Snyder.

samenvatting: The Meninos Bons de Bola (MBB, or Soccer Star Boys) is Brazil's first trans soccer team. We are a collective that welcomes transgender men, transmasculine people, trans women, and travesti players. Our manifesto recognizes that the fight for trans inclusion in athletics is part of a larger struggle against repression and fascism, and as such, we demand full access to sport for people of any and all genders and sexual orientations.

Perceived social norms and acceptance of transgender students in gendered restrooms  / Chelsea L. Monheim & Jennifer J. Ratcliff.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 20 (2023) 2 (apr-jun), p. 353-369
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 20 (2023) 2 (apr-jun), p. 353-369
samenvatting: Transgender college students report higher rates of discrimination in gendered restrooms than do their cisgender peers. It is critical to understand factors that promote greater acceptance of transgender students using restrooms that align with their gender identity. The current experiment examined the impact of perceived social norms on both acceptance of transgender individuals using various locations and transphobia. Participants were 133 cisgender college students recruited on a college campus that had recently added all-gender restrooms to all campus buildings. Participants completed a prescreening measure of transphobia. During the experimental session, participants read results from a fictional study in which the social norm of their college campus was described as either in favor of (supportive norm) or against (unsupportive norm) the installation of all-gender restrooms on campus. Then participants completed measures of acceptance of transgender individuals in various spaces and transphobia. Supporting the primary hypothesis, relative to those in the unsupportive norm condition, participants in the supportive social norm condition were more accepting of transgender individuals using restrooms that aligned with their gender identity. However, the norm manipulation did not impact personal levels of transphobia between prescreen and post experimental manipulation. Implications and future directions will be discussed.
